Going for a Scenic Drive

March 23, 2020
March 23, 2020

Well, we just wouldn’t be a rental car company if we didn’t love going for a scenic drive on St. Croix, now would we? While there’s lots to do by foot and fins, sometimes there’s just nothing like rolling down the windows, putting on some good tunes, and hitting the road to take in the sights.

Some of our favorite moments in the car are when you crest the top of the hill at The Buccaneer, the peak of The Beast, feeling nestled in among the vines and trees of the rain forest, and rounding the bend of Grassy Point.

Our Top 3 Favorite Scenic Drives

  1. North Shore Road is a winding jaunt along the coast. You’ll pass steep ocean bluffs, historic sugar mill ruins, beautiful Cane Bay, and breathtaking views the whole way. There are some great places to stop along the way for a snack, too!
  2. A drive through the rain forest puts you deep within the island’s flora and fauna. Other things you may encounter include beer drinking pigs, an organic farm, and an old dam.
  3. The East End Loop is about a 12 mile drive along rolling hillsides and the Caribbean coastline. You might even make pit stops at Divi Casino and Ziggy’s gas station. Of course, you’ll also want to take the scenic drive out to Point Udall.

The Talented Musicians of St. Croix

March 16, 2020
March 16, 2020

We think it’s safe to say there is live music somewhere on St. Croix every night of the week. From acoustic to rock to folk to R&B to jazz and many other genres, there’s something for just about any musical taste. St. Croix Calendar is a good resource for live music on island.

Perhaps you’ll be lucky enough to catch one of the Caravelle Hotel & Casino’s block parties or free concerts. Or to hear one of the youth steel pan bands that play at various events and festivals. Jazz in the Park in Christiansted and Sun Set Jazz in Frederiksted are popular free monthly events for the community too.

Moko Jumbies

March 9, 2020
March 9, 2020

Whether it’s your first time or 100th time, seeing a Moko Jumbie always catches one’s attention. The brightly dressed stilt dancers make appearances at various events, festivals and parades throughout the year.

As if walking on stilts isn’t remarkable enough, the dancing skills of the Moko Jumbies is out of this world! At every event, they always attract a crowd, but be sure to make your way to the front with a tip in hand for a photo opp.

Moko Jumbies have been part of the Virgin Islands culture for more than 200 years, but date as far back as the 13th century in Africa. They symbolize protectors or guardians who help deter evil spirits. Check out the Guardians of Culture Moko Jumbies Facebook page to learn more and see some great photos.

Going Fishing

March 2, 2020
March 2, 2020

In the waters surrounding St. Croix, you can go fishing for sport or for dinner. You don’t have to go far offshore to catch a number of migratory fish, like mahi, wahoo, tuna and marlin. Or you can stay in-shore for snapper or tarpon.

There are several fishing tournaments on St. Croix each year, including the recent Golden Hook Challenge and Fish With A Vet.

You can learn more information about what kind of fish you’ll find and where in the VInow.com Fishing Guide, as well as the fishing regulations in the USVI. GoToStCroix.com is a great resource for fishing charters.

Snorkeling at Buck Island and Hanging Out on Turtle Beach

February 24, 2020
February 24, 2020

A trip to Buck Island is always such a treat, whether you live on St. Croix or are visiting! From snorkeling the underwater trail to spending an afternoon on Turtle Beach to hiking to the peak, it doesn’t get much closer to perfection. We love exploring Buck Island by fins and feet.

Buck Island by Water

The underwater trail on the eastern side of Buck Island offers some of the best snorkeling on St. Croix. It is within a lagoon formed by a barrier reef, making it both safe and teeming with life. It is home to hundreds of species of marine life, including captivating corals and fascinating fish. Underwater signage describes some of the incredible sights you will see.

Since Buck Island is a National Monument, it is monitored by the National Parks Service. There are currently six concessionaires who are permitted to take boats out to Buck Island, including Caribbean Sea Adventures who is included in our 30th anniversary St. Croix Experience giveaway.

Buck Island by Land

Turtle Beach is a pristine white sand beach surrounded by the most crystal-clear turquoise water you’ve ever seen. You’ll definitely want to swim ashore to walk the beach and, if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, make the trek to the top of Buck Island where the view is absolutely breathtaking. Take a picnic and refreshing beverages to enjoy while relaxing on Turtle Beach. The beach is a nesting place for (you guessed it!) sea turtles, as well as the Least Tern, a locally protected migratory sea bird.

Hiking on St. Croix

February 17, 2020
February 17, 2020

Hiking on St. Croix without a doubt results in spectacular views. Here are a few of our favorite places to explore by foot, from east to west.

Jack and Isaac Bays

Just before you reach Point Udall, you can park at the trail head of a hike to Jack’s and Isaac’s Bays. In addition to sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea, you’ll walk through the interesting arid climate of the East End. Lined with tall grasses, shrubs and interesting cactus, the trail is easy to follow due to frequent hikers. You’ll reach Isaac Bay first, then Jack Bay. Both are turtle nesting beaches, so be careful not to disturb potential nests, but both bays also offer excellent snorkeling.

Goat Hill

Goat Hill is the second highest peak on St. Croix. While the hike is rigorous, the payoff is an amazing 360-degree view, including a perfect birds-eye view of the eastern most point of the United States. There are two hike options: one trail from the Grapetree area and one rugged gravel road from the Cramer’s Park area.

Annaly Bay Tide Pools

Starting at the Renaissance Carambola Beach Resort, this hike goes through the hills of the north shore to Annaly Bay and a series of large, naturally formed tide pools. At it’s highest point, you’ll have an incredible view north and at the base you’ll walk out to a beautiful rocky beach. A dip in the tide pools will require climbing on jagged and steep rocks, but the cool water is worth it if you’re up to the challenge.

Ham’s Bluff Lighthouse

This short, but steep, hike is located where St. Croix’s north shore and west end meet (accessed by driving north from Frederiksted). The path is cleared and easy to navigate. It ends at a rusted out old lighthouse that was first lit in 1915. The breeze at the top is as cooling as the view is stunning.

If you’re interested in hiking, but prefer a group or guided tour, check out CHANT and St. Croix Hiking Association.

Jumping off the Frederiksted Pier

February 10, 2020
February 10, 2020

Jumping off the Frederiksted Pier is a favorite pastime for all ages on St. Croix. Locals jump off the Pier to celebrate milestones — like the last day of the school year or the new year — or simply because it’s a Sunday Funday.

The jump is about 25 feet into crystal clear water and there are ladders at various points along the Pier. You may feel intimidated at first, but after you take the plunge, you’ll want to do it again and again! Skilled jumpers perform flips and tricks, while others simply plug their nose and squeal with delight on their way down!

Note that the Pier is not open to general public foot traffic when a cruise ship is in port and the VI Port Authority may enforce other restrictions. Also, there is no lifeguard on duty, so please understand that you are jumping at your own risk.

If jumping isn’t your thing, be sure to at least take a stroll down the Pier. The water is crystal clear and you may even catch a glimpse of a sea turtle or other marine life!

Virgin Islands AgriFest

February 3, 2020
February 3, 2020

St. Croix is host to the Virgin Islands Agriculture & Food Fair, known as Virgin Islands AgriFest. The largest festival of agriculture in the territory, thousands of people come out to celebrate our abundance of local produce, livestock, food, and artisan products in the Virgin Islands. AgriFest 2020 is the 49th annual event and the theme is “Agriculture: Trendy in 2020”. The Rudolph Shulterbrandt Agricultural Complex will be packed with activities and good food February 15-17.

The main exhibition hall features fruit, vegetable and herb plants and produce for sale, as well as an exhibit of student projects. We enjoy looking at all of the dioramas depicting agriculture in the Virgin Islands before selecting some plants and goodies to take home. In and around the livestock pavilion you’ll find cows, pigs, goats, rabbits, chickens, ducks, turkeys, peacocks and other critters on display. There are awards given for various categories, including the highest honor of Farmer of the Year.

Vendor booths line the walkway, selling clothing, jewelry, soaps, handicrafts, and much more. Nonprofits, schools and government agencies set up educational displays and demonstrations. And let’s not forget about the food! You’ll find something for just about every palate, including local cuisine, baked goods, ice cream, pates, johnny cakes, local juices, vegan foods…the list goes on. It’s truly an event not to be missed!

Horseback Riding

January 29, 2020
January 29, 2020

St. Croix is beautiful by car or foot, no doubt, but exploring the island by horseback is a whole new vantage point that we love. Choose from a scenic ride along the north shore (Equus) or a ride through the rain forest (Cruzan Cowgirls), daytime or sunset. We promise that the view of the beach will look different from atop one of these gentle animals. You can even ride into the sea — the horses love to swim!

Horseback riding on St. Croix is available for all skill levels — whether you’ve never been on a horse before or you are an experienced rider. Both of the below tours offer instruction and they do their best to match riders with the best horse for them.

Christiansted Boardwalk

January 20, 2020
January 20, 2020

Food, entertainment, shopping, people watching…just a few reasons why we love the Christiansted Boardwalk. You’ll find a number of restaurants where you can enjoy the scenery of the Christiansted Harbor, including Brew STX, The Mill Boardwalk Bar & Brick Oven Pizza, Shupe’s on the Boardwalk, Rum Runners, and Nate’s Boathouse.

A favorite pastime on the Christiansted Boardwalk is watching and feeding the tarpon. These large, silver fish congregate along the Boardwalk waiting for someone to toss them some food scraps. One of their favorite treats are chicken wing bones and they’ll race through the water to get to them first — sometimes they may even jump to catch them!

The Boardwalk is where many scuba diving and sailing excursions depart, including Big Beard’s, Dive Experience, Parasail Virgin Islands, and Caribbean Sea Adventures, who is featured in our 30th Anniversary St. Croix Experience Giveaway.

Some of our favorite events occur on the Christiansted Boardwalk too, like the St. Croix Christmas Boat Parade, St. Patrick’s Day festivities, and the Krewe de Barkus Dog Parade next week on February 1, 2020.
