A native of St Croix, US Virgin Islands, a young Kevin Krigger galloped on his first horse at the age of 5 when he took his neighbour’s pleasure horse for a joy ride. He began riding officially at age 10 and has been riding for more than a decade. He arrived in the United States in 2001 and started his riding career in Ohio and Mountaineer before moving west making his mark at the Golden Gate Fields and Emerald Downs. Krigger is now a regular in the Southern California racing circuit. Krigger is the first African-American jockey to win the Santa Anita Derby in its 78-year history.
The Road to the Kentucky Derby is a long one- starting off with the Prep Season races the previous September and building to a crescendo with the Championship Series weeks before the Kentucky Derby.
Like Krigger, the dream of racing in the Kentucky Derby inspires the ambitions surrounding thousands of horses and their owners, trainers and jockeys. At about 6:24 pm Eastern time on Saturday, May 4, the world will witness the fastest and most anticipated two minutes in sports history. The gates will spring open, and 20 horses will go head to head to reach the finish line first, win nearly $1.5 million, a blanket of roses, and a place in racing history. But more than the prize, if this jockey from St. Croix wins, he will be the first black jockey to win the Kentucky Derby since Jimmy Winkfield won two straight, in 1901 and 1902.
The entire staff of Centerline Car Rental wishes Kevin Krigger, all jockeys, owners and trainers from St. Croix and all the participants, the best of luck in this year’s Kentucky Derby.
